The White Cliffs of Dover
|
Dover is the big ferry terminal for a short hop to France from England. All day and night a steady flow of trucks, cars and buses make there way onto a ferry for the ride over to Calais. Sort of like a trip from Hyannis to Nantucket, but at a much grander scale. Lots of history here going back to the stone age, and a bunch of Roman influence since Julius Caesar paid a visit around 50 BC.

We hopped a shuttle to the town center, a short trip but a forbidding walk. We got off in Market square for an amble about the commerce center. There's a nice museum, a giant vape machine in case the town isn't cold and damp enough, and little else to recommend it as a tourist stop. The town feels a bit past it's glory days, and the business street seems heavily weighted towards Barber Shops (about 3 per block), Vape shops (about 4 per block), Video Game stores (about 2 per block), and a bunch of discount stores and questionable eating establishments. It was a short visit on a chilly day, but it was good to get off the ship for a while. Kind of a funny choice for a final port of call before disembarking the next day in Rotterdam.

I couldn't find any signage around to inform me of what this was. Too lazy to Google it.
